Donaueschingen-Villingen EDTD
Visited May 2006 as the main destination of the Black Forest Rally. We had somewhat mixed weather with low cloud and rain for part of the time. The chaps in the tower were very helpful with the met information and we spent some time up there on several occasions looking at their computer information. The airfield is in high country at 2,231 ft AMSL and has good facilities. There is a hotel on the site with a restaurant and, next door, an aero club with refreshments. Fuel is easily available on the apron.
We stayed in the nearby town, which is the alleged source of the Danube and has a large ornamental spring from which the waters flow forth. In the town, which is not especially interesting, there is a large brewery which has its own restaurant facility. Most of us stayed at the Gasthaus Hirschen which was an agreeable billet and reasonably priced. We had a group dinner in their restaurant one evening. Website at http://www.hotel-zum-hirschen.de/
Notable for me was the moment I was introduced to the word “kamaraden” in German for the first time when the proprietor asked when my friends would be coming to the bar!
We took a day trip from Donaueschingen to nearby Konstanz (qv). (RG)
